FUNCTION:
Under the general supervision of the WIC Director, Breastfeeding Coordinator and Site Supervisor to provide advanced breastfeeding training and education to WIC Program professionals and participants. Breastfeeding counseling session will be performed in person or by telephone. Assist Breastfeeding Coordinator in monthly meetings. Maintain records associated with breastfeeding and available to work outside regular clinic hours.
MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist Breastfeeding Coordinator in developing the Nutrition Education and Breastfeeding Plan
Be active in the breastfeeding peer counselor program
Train staff on appropriate breastfeeding situations that are beyond their level of expertise
Provides up to date information and promotes breastfeeding among peers.
Counsels pregnant and breastfeeding mothers in a timely manner.
Identifies breastfeeding experiences that are not the norm and makes appropriate referrals.
Acts as a positive role model, exhibiting good parenting skills as well as breastfeeding skills.
Address specific concerns of expectant and breastfeeding mothers
Maintains daily documentation of counseling sessions.
Observe peer counselors in the clinic and make suggestions to build confidence and knowledge
Assist breastfeeding mother with concerns outside the normal breastfeeding experience in person or by phone.
Provides breastfeeding support and education in the community as requested.
Attend monthly staff and team meetings.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school or equivalent education preferred. Must be able to speak, read, and write English. Spanish speaking preferred. Must provide proof of license as a Certified Lactation Consultant prior to working.
