Most updated recalls and alerts can be found here.

Food Recalls

A food recall happens when a producer removes a product from the market due to concerns it may cause illness. Recalls can occur for several reasons:

  • Contamination by bacteria (e.g., Salmonella) or parasites (e.g., Cyclospora)
  • Presence of foreign objects (e.g., glass, metal)
  • Undeclared major allergens

What to Do:

  1. Discard the recalled product.
  2. Clean your kitchen thoroughly:
    • Wash cookware, utensils, and surfaces with hot, soapy water.
    • Sanitize with a diluted bleach solution (1 TBSP bleach per 1 gallon water).
    • For undeclared allergens, clean all surfaces and items that contacted the product.

Food Illness Outbreaks

A foodborne outbreak occurs when two or more people get the same illness from contaminated food or drink. Officials investigate outbreaks to identify and address the source to prevent further illness. Depending on the scope, federal, state, or local officials may be involved.
