Farmers Market Season Returns: Fresh Produce and Healthy Choices Await

April 20, 2026

With the return of farmers' markets, East Texans have direct access to fresh, nutritious foods grown right here in our region. These markets not only support local agriculture but also play a key role in promoting healthier lifestyles.

One of the biggest benefits of the farmers market season is the opportunity for eligible WIC participants to take advantage of the Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP). This program provides benefits that can be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables directly from approved vendors.

FMNP is designed to:

  • Increase access to fresh, locally grown produce
  • Support local farmers and small businesses
  • Encourage healthier eating habits across our communities

Participants in programs like WIC may qualify for FMNP benefits, making it easier for families to incorporate fresh foods into their daily meals.

Shopping at farmers' markets also allows you to:

  • Choose seasonal produce at peak freshness
  • Connect with local growers and learn where your food comes from
  • Support your local economy

As you visit your local farmers' market this season, look for vendors who accept FMNP benefits and take advantage of the opportunity to bring home fresh, healthy foods.

For more information about eligibility, how to use your benefits, and locations, visit our Farmers Market Page
